What is Pinyin – and why does it matter for Mandarin learners?

Pinyin is now available across TiS Mandarin transcripts, giving learners a crucial bridge between characters, sounds and tones.

你好.

If you're just starting to learn Mandarin, knowing that those characters are pronounced nǐ hǎo makes quite a difference.

And that's where Pinyin comes in.

Pinyin is the standard system used to represent Mandarin sounds using the Roman alphabet. It gives learners a way to connect the Chinese characters they see with the sounds they hear.

But there is an important catch.

Those familiar-looking letters don't always behave exactly as an English speaker might expect — and Mandarin is tonal, so pronunciation involves learning both the sounds themselves and the tones that go with them.

Used well, Pinyin can therefore be an incredibly useful bridge. It helps beginners work on pronunciation, recognise sound patterns and gain confidence while gradually developing their knowledge of Chinese characters.

It's also something our teachers have been asking us for. Feedback from Mandarin classrooms helped reinforce just how useful it could be for learners alongside authentic spoken language.

So we're very happy to say that Pinyin is now available across TiS Mandarin transcripts.

A relatively small-looking addition.

But for someone taking their first steps in Mandarin?

很有帮助. Very helpful indeed.
