MFL GCSE
Since 2012 we've helped more than 500,000 students improve their grade in the GCSE exam.

"As MFL teachers, we're often torn between two crucial needs: inspiring a love of language and culture, while ensuring GCSE success.
This is School allows us to achieve both!"

Dear Colleague,
I’m George Van den Bergh.
Former MFL teacher and now the Founder and CEO of This is School.
For over 12 years, we’ve helped almost 1,000,000 students and teachers bring a buzz into MFL departments as well as smash their grades at GCSE.
You’re probably here because of one (or all) of these things:
1. Time: You’d love to bring more GCSE-level authentic language into your classroom but don’t have the time to find or create it yourself.
2. GCSE Results: Most of the current online MFL GCSE products will help your students pass the exam, but none of them also help foster a love of language or an interest in culture.
3. Resources: You’ve bought into a GCSE textbook that you (have to) use. It has an accompanying online resource. But you know - deep down - that the content sucks a bit.

Sound familiar?
That’s because that was me before I set up This is School.
That was me before I started filming unscripted interviews with young native-speakers across the world and posting them on thisislanguage.com. (Yup, that was the original name of our platform.)
That was me before - with constant feedback from teachers and students - we refined the platform, added features and increased our content offering to cover the entire GCSE curriculum.
That was me before we stuck to our core principles that getting a student the highest grade possible at GCSE was as important as instilling in them a genuine love for languages.
I was bowled-over by the results that a simple shift in content could have.
For one thing, students were actually listening… to the Listenings! Because they were videos of real people talking for real!
Suddenly they weren’t being patronised by scripted, acted, fake language.
So they were actually taking an interest in what was being said.
More importantly, their exam results proved it out.

This wasn’t just an isolated incident.
Schools across the country came back to us at the end of every year telling us:
- How easy their students had found the GCSE Listening exam.
- How their confidence had skyrocketed.
- How uptake had increased.
We celebrated like crazy!
Of course, Listening is only 1/4 of the story for GCSE.
So we created games and game-mechanics around the other aspects of getting students prepared for GCSE.
We worked like crazy and the results came flooding in; our approach not only improved grades at GCSE, it helped develop a love of learning.

I’m not going to make a bold promise that taking out a free trial with This is School is going to solve all of your problems.
But I can promise you that if you follow our course you will 100% improve your students’ GCSE results over the course of a year.
And you may also just encourage the next generation of language teachers 😉.
"One of the unintended effects of using a product like TiS - which is an exam preparation website with huge personality -
is that students are actually talking about languages in the corridors. There’s now a real buzz here!"
